Skills Development Scotland: Flexible Training Opportunities Fund

If you’re a small business or sole trader based in Scotland looking to invest in learning and development opportunities for employees, you could be eligible for the Flexible Training Opportunities funding.

Provided by Skills Development Scotland Co. Limited (SDS), the Skills Development fund provides small Scottish businesses with the opportunity to apply for up to £3,000 towards employee training. The funding will cover a maximum of 50% of training costs and the threshold limit per employee is £1,000.

Funding is allocated on a first-come first-serve basis, so if you’re interested in gaining funding, you need to act quickly. The fund opened on 24th June 2015 and will run for one year.

Am I eligible?

To be eligible for this funding the business must employ fewer than 100 employees and staff must reside in Scotland. Businesses must be private sector organisations, voluntary or not-for-profit firms, and possess evidence to confirm the status of the business.

This funding is not available for public sector businesses or employees, or businesses funded by the public sector.

How does it work?

You must apply for training through the Flexible Training Opportunities webpage at least 10 working days prior to the anticipated start date of the training.

If your application is successful you will receive confirmation from Skills Development Scotland. Provided all information is accurate, this confirmation will be sent within 10 working days of receiving your application.

You must submit a claim for your funding no more than 20 working days after completing the approved training.

In certain circumstances, you will be asked to provide additional information after you have completed your training. This will generally occur if you have been awarded the maximum FTO funding contribution or if one employee has received multiple training opportunities.

Upon receipt of your claim form, SDS will notify you if your claim is successful within five working days. If your claim is correct, SDS will pay the fund into a business bank account within 30 working days.
